The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) announced the signing of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) for the Konektadong Pinoy Act, marking a key milestone in the country’s push for faster, more affordable internet access. The Philippines is set to complete its National Fiber Backbone project by June 2026, a ₱16.1 billion initiative led by the DICT to modernize nationwide connectivity. The project will extend fiber coverage across Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, supported by World Bank funding. Meta Platforms, Inc. has pledged a 2 terabits-per-second bandwidth allocation to boost the network’s capacity. The backbone will provide high-speed internet for government offices, schools, and underserved communities, improving accessibility and affordability. This transformative project is expected to elevate the Philippines’ digital competitiveness and foster inclusive economic growth.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has committed to providing fiber internet access to all Department of Education (DepEd) schools and state universities and colleges (SUCs) by 2026. Secretary Henry Aguda confirmed that around 11,000 DepEd schools will be connected in the next rollout phase, replacing satellite-based links with fiber connections. Lawmakers emphasized that SUCs should also be prioritized, requesting detailed rollout maps and cost plans. Funding will come from the Free Public Internet Access Program and the Spectrum Users Fund, totaling ₱7.5 billion for 2026. The initiative aims to modernize public education and bridge the digital divide across the country.
